Artificial Intelligence gained roots in the early 1900s and is now growing as one of the fundamental concepts of industrial operation. AI has dominated the space of streamlining workflows to optimizing production. The most debatable question that’s worrying is, ‘Will Artificial Intelligence take away jobs?’. The answer could be between yes and no. While some areas are threatened, some will create new requirements. The fact that artificial intelligence will be replacing jobs is inevitable in some cases. Let’s plunge deeper into the matter.

  1. Data Entry Clerks: Data entry clerks are being replaced by artificial intelligence due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. There are technologies like Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) that can extract data from emails, forms, and other documents. The input data will be high-speed, and the result will reduce human errors.
  2. Receptionists: Receptionists can be replaced with a range of tools and technologies. These include virtual receptionists, self-service kiosks, AI chatbots, and voice assistants. These are generally embedded in websites, answer FAQs, and schedule appointments. Drift, Google Dialogflow, and Intercom can direct customers to the right place.
  3. Telemarketers: Telemarketers have a great chance of being replaced with Natural Language Processing (NLP), and the integration of CRM and analytics occurs. Artificial intelligence is programmed to follow the laws strictly. AI can help in call logs, updating the customer database, and analyzing the engagement metrics for future usage.
  4. Bookkeeping clerks: The bookkeeping clerks can be replaced by machine learning technology, which will automatically categorize the expenses and transactions. It is known that there will be an improvement in accuracy over time. Such improvements will help to detect unusual errors in financial records. Since bookkeeping is a repetitive job, it will be highly replaced by machines and automation. Artificial Intelligence is replacing jobs that don’t require much human involvement.
  5. Customer service representatives: Customer service executives can be replaced by smart automation tools. They can answer all FAQs, provide instant responses 24/7, and route it to human agents when required.
  6. Truck and Taxi Drivers: Taxi drivers can be replaced by autonomous driving technology and sensors. Sensing the environment can be done by GPS, radar, and LIDAR technology. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) can understand the surroundings and make instant road decisions. They can stop at red lights, change lanes, and even re-route.
  7. Delivery drivers: The delivery drivers can be replaced by Artificial Intelligence and can handle the delivery routes without humans. Long-haul autonomous trucks and small sidewalk robots will justify this step. The AI-driven drones can deliver things over short distances. The AI-enabled robots can drop parcels in the smart lockers and send them directly to the customers.
  8. Security guards: Security guards can be replaced by AI-driven surveillance cameras that detect suspicious behavior and alert law enforcement. AI can manage and monitor the buildings much more efficiently than humans. They can scan biometrics, do facial recognition, and record mobile credentials.
  9. Manufacturing workers: The manufacturing workers can be replaced by Artificial Intelligence. Automated assembly lines can handle repetitive, precise tasks such as screwing, welding, and riveting. AI-powered computer vision can scan products faster and can identify cracks, malalignments, and sort defective items. AI-guided robots and AGVs (automated guided vehicles) can be used for forklift driving, warehouse stocking, and transporting materials. AI algorithms can do the production planning and scheduling. AI can flawlessly generate a compliance report, inventory updates, and updates to the production performance dashboard.
  10. Proofreaders: AI is already replacing the proofreading action in a significant way. There are tools for grammar checks, spell checks, tone adjustments, contextual understanding, and multilingual proofreading. Proofreading is an essential job that artificial intelligence will replace.

Why are specific jobs being replaced by Artificial Intelligence?

Not that all jobs are at risk of being vulnerable as AI technology approaches the threshold. Automation is at greater risk compared to others.

  • Repetitive tasks: Certain jobs that are repetitive and don’t require much logical thinking, like data entry, basic accounting, and customer service, can be replaced by Chatbots and other software. According to a report, almost 50% of the administrative work can be done by AI. This figure applies to industries that involve manual and administrative work.
  • Jobs with minimum emotional intelligence: Certain jobs that require human intelligence and a high emotional quotient cannot be replaced by AI. Teaching and nursing cannot be replaced. However, jobs like bookkeeping and assembly line labor can be replaced. According to a study, CTOs can play a significant role in driving innovation in the healthcare industry.
  • Cost-effective drive automation: The desire for efficiency and automation can trigger AI-driven automation to be applied in place of human-driven jobs. Self-checkout lanes and AI-driven inventory control are already becoming popular. According to a study, in the US, almost 47% of the jobs are being replaced by AI-driven methods. This is mainly due to the affinity towards cost-effective and efficient work.
  • Technology assisting job replacement: Some jobs that require skills, judgment, empathy, and inventiveness can be replaced with AI. Jobs related to driving and logistics can be accomplished by technology. Artificial intelligence is expected to replace some jobs by 2030 that can be done more efficiently by technology.

There is a significant concern that AI will certainly replace some jobs. According to a study, AI and Robotics will displace almost 85 million jobs by 2025. They can also create 97 million new roles related to AI development, human AI collaboration, and Data science. The real challenge lies in how humans are trained to adhere to AI-related technology and act in accordance with it.
